As we come to a close to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I think it's fair to say we’re all well aware of breast cancer. With 1 in 8 Canadian women receiving this diagnosis, you likely know someone affected. While the research into support, treatment, and recurrence is exciting and ongoing, today I want to focus on prevention.
To discuss prevention, we must first acknowledge the rising rates of breast cancer. What factors might be contributing to this trend, and more importantly, which ones are within your control?
Here are three impactful changes you can make today to help lower your risk of breast cancer:
1. Limit or Eliminate Alcohol Consumption
What the research says: Increased alcohol consumption correlates with higher rates of hormone-positive breast cancer.
One challenge we face with alcohol is the lack of information on exactly how much is safe. You’ll need to decide for yourself, based on available data and your genetics, what level of intake feels comfortable for you.
Tried giving up alcohol before? Sober October is a fantastic opportunity to experiment with an alcohol-free lifestyle.
2. Prioritize a Diet Rich in DIM
What the research says: Diets higher in vegetables are associated with lower rates of breast cancer recurrence.
Diindolylmethane (DIM) is found in cruciferous veggies like kale, Swiss chard, spinach, Brussels sprouts, and broccoli seed sprouts. Incorporate these into your daily meals to support your body’s natural defenses.
3. Move Your Body!
What the research says: Women who are physically active have a 12-21% lower risk of breast cancer.
How can you fit more movement into your day? Could you park farther from the grocery store? Start your day with a walk or take an active lunch break?
Remember, excuses will come up first. It’s natural. But challenge them! No one feels like they have extra time — you have to make time for movement, just as you would for a hair appointment, weekend getaway, or work meeting. Prioritize your health by scheduling exercise into your life.
It’s All About Control Where You Can
While these lifestyle changes are powerful, it’s so important to understand that sometimes, even when you do everything "right," a breast cancer diagnosis can still occur. There are many factors beyond our control. That’s why it’s important to focus on what is within your reach, monitor your breast health regularly, and always advocate for yourself if you notice anything concerning.
