Osteo-what? Five Things You Didn't Know About Manual Osteopathy

Genevieve is our Manual Osteopath, Cranial Sacral Practitioner, and Registered Acupuncturist at The Wellness Lab. Genevieve answers five common questions about the practice of Osteopathy!

1. What is Manual Osteopathy?

The practice of Manual Osteopathy is a gentle, hands-on method of treating pain, injury, and internal conditions (like auto-immune or digestive issues) by addressing restrictions in movement and circulation with subtle, relaxing adjustments.

Imaging if an RMT (Massage Therapist), Chiropractor, and Physiotherapist all melded into one! However, with Manual Osteopathy you will not remove clothing (as you do with massage) and there is no bone crunching or cracking. Many patients fall asleep during treatment!

2. What can I expect from a session?

Manual Osteopathy reduces pain while improving blood circulation and lymph flow. It grounds the nervous system, supports proper hormone function, and restores mobility after birth, burnout, illness, or chronic pain.

Following a comprehensive health history intake, your Manual Osteopath will use a gentle, hands on approach to remove restrictions in the body. Soft pressure, release techniques, and gentle holds are part of the experience. Expect to feel very relaxed!

3. Is it safe for children and babies?

Absolutely! Manual Osteopathy is an excellent choice for help with reflux, indigestion, constipation, torticollis (neck pain), and body or cranial asymmetry. Using a soft hands-on technique, Osteopathy supports proper nervous system function and neuro-muscular development as well as digestion, mobility, and baby’s comfort. Osteopathy is a safe, gentle, and effective option for your baby during these critical early stages.

4. What about children and teens?

Yes! Osteopathy for children and teens provides gentle, supportive care for growing bodies experiencing ADD/ADHD, anxiety and stress, sleep struggles, and neurological developmental issues. Osteopathy for children and teens is also beneficial for indigestion, constipation, injury and growing pains. Using safe, hands-on techniques, osteopathy promotes comfort, balance, and overall wellness to support healthy development.

5. What is Cranial Sacral Therapy?

This type of specialized form of Osteopathy focuses on the Central Nervous System, Spine Health, Pelvic/Hip Health, and the skull and facial bones. It is extremely relaxing and gentle. Genevieve is additionally trained in this modality and often weaves it into her practice with patients of all ages and stages.
