From Irregular to Predictable: How to Restore Your Cycle

Irregular menstrual cycles are one of the most common concerns I see in practice. Many women are told that irregular periods are simply something they have to live with, or that hormonal birth control is the only option for regulation. While birth control can certainly be helpful for some people, it doesn't always address the underlying reason the cycle became irregular in the first place.
The menstrual cycle is often referred to as a "fifth vital sign" because it reflects what's happening in the body as a whole. When cycles become irregular -- whether that means missed periods, cycles longer than 35 days, frequent cycles, or unpredictable bleeding -- it can be a sign that the body is out of balance.
The good news is that with the right support, many people can restore healthier, more regular cycles.
What is considered an irregular cycle?
A typical menstrual cycle lasts 24-35 days, with ovulation happening roughly midway through the cycle. Irregular cycles may include:
Cycles longer than 35 days
Cycles shorter than 24 days
Missing periods for several months (outside of pregnancy and postpartum)
Highly unpredictable cycle lengths
Spotting between periods
Occasional variation is normal, especially during times of stress, travel, illness, or major life transitions. But persistent irregularity often points to something deeper.
Common root causes of irregular periods:
As a naturopathic doctor, I look beyond symptoms to understand why cycles have become irregular. Some common underlying factors include:
Hormonal imbalances
Conditions such as PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, or elevated prolactin can disrupt ovulation and cycle timing
Stress and nervous system dysregulation
Chronic stress can suppress ovulation through its effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis.
Blood sugar imbalance
Insulin resistance is a key driver of hormonal disruption, particularly in conditions like PCOS
Nutrient deficiencies
Iron, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, and essential fatty acids all play roles in hormone production and ovulation.
Under-fuelling or over-exercising
When the body perceives an energy deficit, it may suppress reproductive hormones as a way to conserve energy.
Gut and liver health
The body relies on the liver and digestive system to metabolize and eliminate hormones effectively
A naturopathic approach to cycle regulation:
Naturopathic medicine focuses on restoring balance so that the body can return to its natural rhythm.
Treatment plans are individualized, but may include:
Nutritional support
Balanced meals with adequate protein, healthy fats, and fibre help stabilize blood sugar and support hormone production
Stress regulation
Nervous system support -- through sleep, mindfulness, movement, and adaptogenic herbs -- can help restore healthy communication between the brain and ovaries
Targeted supplementation
Depending on the root cause, nutrients such as magnesium, inositol, omega-3 fatty acids, or B vitamins may support hormonal balance.
Herbal medicine
Botanical medicines can gently support ovulation, regulate cycles, and reduce hormonal symptoms.
Cycle tracking
Tracking periods and symptoms as well as basal body temperature or cervical mucus helps us understand whether ovulation is occurring and how the cycle is functioning.
When to seek support:
If your cycles have been irregular for more than three months, or if you're experiencing additional symptoms such as severe PMS, acne, hair loss, fatigue, or difficulty conceiving, it's worth investigating further.
Lab testing can often provide valuable insight into hormone levels, thyroid function, blood sugar balance, and nutrient status.
Supporting your body's natural rhythm
Your menstrual cycle is not random -- it's a carefully orchestrated hormonal process that reflects your overall health. When we address the root causes of imbalance, the body often has an incredible capacity to return to a more regular rhythm.
If you've been experiencing irregular cycles, know that there are many supportive options available. With a personalized, whole-body approach, it's often possible to restore balance and help your cycle work the way it was designed to.
